After two days and two hundred kajillion personalized videos, even the Old Spice Guy has to take a break and come out of the bathroom.
Please forgive the link overload here, but after spending the last 48 hours or so in front of a camera, the Old Spice Guy (Isaiah Mustafa in real life) has been overwhelming social media channels by tweeting links to customized videos made for fans with his bare hands.
The suave smelling dude responded directly to ordinary average fans from Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, gave shout-outs to corporate pals like Starbucks, GQ and sister company Gillette, nods to influential blogger fans like Perez Hilton and Guy Kawasaki (“Is there a Girl Kawasaki?”!), props to celebrity friends like Ellen Degeneres, Ryan Seacrest, Apolo Anton Ohno, and Ashton Kutcher. He wowed Mrs. Kutcher by bashing a pirate piñata, courted Alyssa Milano with roses, wooed Rose McGowan, successfully proposed marriage on behalf of fan JS Beals, and admitted he’s only human and will eventually die someday. He even responded to himself (Isaiah Mustafa). He finally concluded the whole viral extravaganza by saying all good things must come to an end, dashing the hopes of legions of fans hoping for their own personal video replies.
Writing from a dad’s perspective, one of the best video replies was to Isaiah Mustafa’s daughter, Haley, who asked why the Old Spice Guy looks so much like her father. C’mon, all together now: awwww!
The two-day viral blitz has made the Old Spice campaign by Wieden + Kennedy the most watched and (so far) the fourth most subscribed channel on YouTube. The new “Questions” commercial, below, currently has over 5.8 million views.
Swan Dive… into the best night of your life!
Yes, Ryan Seacrest was right to ask whether this new commercial is even better than the original (if that’s possible).
Just in case you’re wondering how the guy’s brown shorts changed into blue jeans, Old Spice Man provides an answer to that, too:
UPDATE: ReadWriteWeb has a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how the viral videos were produced.
And the viral hits just keep on coming:
Actress Alyssa Milano has filmed her own reply (from her bathroom, naturally), challenging Old Spice Guy to make a $100,000 donation in support of the National Wildlife Federations Gulf Oil Spill Restoration Fund. Well played!
UPDATE 2: The Old Spice YouTube channel just moved up to #3 most subscribed (all time) sponsors (behind OfficialTwilightFilm and InfinityWard), passing TheSims.
