33 Chilean Miners, 1 Year and Freshly Pressed

My Freshly Pressed experience came from a post about the Chilean miners, who were rescued October 13, 2010.

It was one year ago that 33 trapped Chilean miners were freed from their underground captivity while 1 billion people around the world watched live.

I watched “Los 33,” too. Then I wrote a post shortly afterwards: Oakley and the Chilean Miners—Publicity Goldmine. It was about the rescue from the perspective of how Orange County-based Oakley benefitted from the “product placement” of having the miners emerge wearing their sunglasses.

Was the publicity avalanche opportunistic or inadvertent? Did it matter? Why were some people so upset if Oakley happened to benefit by helping? I hit “publish” late that night, then went to bed without giving it much more thought.

Doing Well By Doing Good

Move over, Lance Armstrong. Oakley has 33 new “celebrity” product endorsers.

Unless you were trapped in a cave somewhere yourself over the last few weeks, you probably heard about the dramatic rescue of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days.

The good news is they got out, with a little help from their friends and a few corporate sponsors.

At the very same time Chris Brogan was speaking to Linked OC members at Oakley about how companies are using technology to connect with consumers, the Chilean miners were reconnecting with their families thanks to technology donated by Oakley and others.

Oakley was the site of the Linked OC Chris Brogan event.


Typist, blogger, author, marketer, trainer, entrepreneur… Chris Brogan is a busy guy. Expensive, too. Fortunately, he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Brogan and his companies (New Marketing Labs, Human Business Works, Third Tribe Marketing) help other companies use social media tools to be more human in their business relationships. Or as Chris puts it, “…it’s really ridiculous that my job is to fly all over the earth explaining why video and the Internet is awesome…and yet, that’s the long and short of it.”

Speaking at Oakley’s corporate office last Tuesday under the auspices of Bryan Elliott’s Linked Orange County group, it was a freewheeling, sometimes rambling, but always entertaining discussion. Continue reading
